最高においしいカラフルなフルーツサラダができました♡

Voila! You got yourself the best fruit salad ever ♡

アルコールが苦手な私は、料理にワインを使う度に余ったワインの使い道に困っていました。その解決法がこのフルーツサラダ！白ワインをたっぷり使った「サラダ」というより、デザートですね（笑）。好みで、旬のフルーツをたっぷりいれましょう。前日に作っておくとフルーツにもワインシロップにも味がしみておいしさが倍増します。オリジナルレシピは、『Giada De Laurentiis (Food Network)』から。

This is my favourite fruit salad. It's not only super delicious but it also helps finish a bottle of wine when I use it for cooking (I don't drink a lot of wine...). You can use any fruit in season that you like. The longer you leave it in the fridge, the tastier it becomes.  It's delicious when it's served alone, but I'm sure it is even better over ice cream! This recipe is from Giada De Laurentiis (Food Network).

材料：

• 白ワイン　1 1/4 カップ
• 砂糖　1/3 カップ
• メロン又は瓜　半分　(約3カップ)
• いちご　1パック
• 種無しぶどう　1 カップ
• ミント　大さじ1

作り方：

1. 鍋にワインと砂糖を入れ沸騰させる。砂糖が溶けてなくなるまで２分ほどかき混ぜ、鍋を火から下ろす。
2. 果物を食べやすい大きさに切り、ミントと一緒に大きめのボールに入れる。温かいワインシロップをかけ、軽く混ぜ合せる。ラップをかけて、冷蔵庫で２時間ほど冷やす。時々かき混ぜる。

『カナダの日』プロジェクト３ ❖ Canada Day Project 3

ここ２週間ばかりクッキーばかり焼いています（食べるのも大変なのであります）。その中でも私のお気に入りがこのクッキーです。『カナダの日』プロジェクトのクッキーとして合格です。あともう一つ、焼いてみたいクッキーがあります。その後、ダイエットでもしないといけない状態になるでしょう。オリジナルレシピは『Smitten Kitchen』から。

This is my favourite cookie of all time so far. They are not only pretty to look at but also these cookies will melt in your mouth (thanks to the powdered sugar). This one is going straight to my approved list for the Canada Day Project. I've been baking lots of cookies lately (and eating them...). I have one more new cookie recipe to try, and I am ready for the big day! You can find this recipe in "Smitten Kitchen."

材料：

• 無塩バター　230 グラム（常温に戻しておく）
• 粉砂糖　2/3 カップ（ふるいにかけておく）
• 卵黄　2 個（室温に戻しておく）
• 塩　少々
• バニラエキストラクト又はアーモンドエキストラクト　小さじ1 
• 薄力粉　2 カップ
• オレンジ　2個（オレンジの皮をすりおろしておく）
• ドライ‧クランベリー　1/2 カップ（みじん切りにしておく）

作り方：

1. ハンドミキサーで、バターをクリーム状に混ぜる。粉砂糖を加え、滑らかになるまで混ぜる。卵黄、塩、クランベリー、オレンジの皮の順に加えて更に混ぜ合せる。薄力粉を加え、粉が見えなくなる程度に混ぜる。生地をラップに包んで冷蔵庫で2時間ほどねかす。
2. オーブンを摂氏180度（華氏350度）に温めておく。
3. 薄力粉をふった台の上で10ミリのほどの厚さに生地を延ばし、好みのクッキー型で抜く。12〜14分ほど焼く。きつね色になる手前で取り出す。

A beautiful day in Fairfax

車で30分のところに Fairfax（フェアファックス）という街があります。私は、この街が大好きです。周りが沢山の木に囲まれていて、バンクーバーを思い出します。Fairfaxには、オーガニックのお店で有名な『Good Earth』という食料品のスーパーがあります。なんと1969年からオープンしている老舗です。自然を愛し、環境を大切にする人達が集まる街。街全体にやさしいエネルギーが漂っています。

When I first visited Fairfax, I instantly liked it. The town reminded me of Vancouver (lots of trees). If I could have found a nice apartment there, I'd probably be living there now. The town has a very popular organic grocery store, called "Good Earth," which opened in 1969. This is the town where nature loving and environmentally conscious people gather. You sense good feelings all over the town.

スーパーへの道 ❖ Walking to a Grocery Store

遠くにベージュ色の建物が見えますか？あれは有名なサン‧クゥエンティン州立刑務所です。カリフォルニア州の死刑執行（男性のみ）はここで行われます。

Can you see a beige building in the far distance...? That's the famous San Quentin State Prison. All California state executions for men happen there.

 歩行者用の道路があるようでない...でも、大丈夫。もう少しです。

 You can't really tell which side of the road I should be walking...but you are almost there!

無事に食料品を持ち帰ることに成功！

Mission accomplished!

近所にはいろんなお店があるのですが、食料品を売っているお店だけはありません。ところが最近、スーパーへつながる「道」を発見！歩いていける距離です（片道20分）。ハイウェイの横を歩くのでちょっと薄汚れた「道」を通らないといけませんが、歩いて行けるのでとても便利。私の行動範囲が少し広がりました（笑）。この薄汚れた「道」をよく見ると、他の場所にも繋がっているようです。期待できそうです。今度は何を発見するか乞うご期待！

We have many shops in our neighbourhood with the exception of a grocery store. However, I finally found a path that leads to a grocery store. Yes, I can walk there on my own! As you can see, the path to the grocery store is not pretty, but I'm not complaining. My world just got bigger now.  I even saw another (ugly) path that looks very promising. Stay tuned for my future report on more new discoveries!

ポイント‧レイズ‧ステーションの『Cowgirl Creamery』は、２人の女性がスタートしたオーガニックのアルチザンチーズです。アルチザンチーズとは（artisan cheese ）その名の通り「職人（artisan）」の手によって丹精込めて造られたチーズのことです。幾つかのチーズを味見した後、『Red Hawk』と『Wagon Wheel』というチーズを買いました。評判通りのおいしいチーズです。多くの人達が、ポイントレイズのビーチへ行く前にここに立ち寄り、ピクニック用のチーズとフランスパンを買っていくようです。

Two women founded Cowgirl Creamery in Point Reyes Station. And, it is the most famous organic artisan cheese in the San Francisco Bay Area. We tasted a couple of samples and ended up buying a piece of "Red Hawk" and "Wagon Wheel." They were the best cheeses we've ever had. People stop at Tomales Bay Foods to get Cowgirl Creamery cheese and baguette before they head up to Point Reyes. We will definitely do the same next time!

オーガニック菜園第三週 ❖ Organic Garden Week THREE

赤じそも負けていません、もうそろそろ摘んで食べた方が良いのかも。

先週、風の強い日が続きました...

We had a couple of very windy days last week...

オーガニック菜園も三週間目に入りました。皆、元気にしております。赤じそとバジルは、下の葉が枯れてきました。もうそろそろ収穫の時期なのかもしれません。でも、しそジュースにしたり、バジルのペストにしたりするには量が少ないのでした...。

話題は変わりますが、2日前から日記を始めました（突然）。日記と言っても前日に食べたものを記しただけのもの。私は、他の人が毎日何を食べているのかとても気になるのです（気になりませんか？）。食べたものを記録しているブログを観るのが私の密かな楽しみ。よく考えると、その日の気分も食事に反映されている気がするのです。ということで題して『ごはん日記』がスタートしました（一年間だけ）。嘘偽りなくできるだけ正直に記録していきます。まだ始めて三日目ですが、あまりの食事の量の多さに自分のことながら驚いています（クッキーモンスターになりつつあります）。ちょっと量を減らした方が良いのではと思案中。こちらのテレビで放映されていたアメリカのドキュメンタリー番組『The Weight of the Nation』を観て、毎朝欠かさず飲んでいたオレンジジュースをこの日記のスタートと同時にきっぱりと断念。果汁100％とは言え、そのまま食べると体に良いオレンジも、ジュースになると糖分が濃縮され、他のソフトドリンクとほとんど変わらない量の糖分を摂取することになるのだそうです。先週末、安売りで大量に買ったオレンジジュースを前にコリンはこの私の『脱！オレンジジュース』宣言に不満のご様子です（笑）。私の『ごはん日記』を覗きたい方はこちらからどうぞ（ブログの右上からもアクセス可能）。

Our organic garden has entered week 3, and all our plants are doing well. I think I should start harvesting some Red Shiso and Basil before their leaves start falling off. There is not enough to make Red Shiso juice or Basil pesto. I have to come up with a plan B. 

I started my food diary a couple of days ago. I post things I ate on the previous day (as honestly as I can). I'm always curious about what every one eats. Things you eat often reveal what emotional state you are in (sad, happy, angry, or just damn hungry!). I'm only going to do it for a year, and see what happens. I'm already amazed (and horrified) with the amount of food I ate for the past three days. That's a lot of food (and cookies!) for a person of my size. With the start of this diary, I stopped drinking orange juice in the morning  after we watched "The Weight of the Nation" (I used to drink a huge glass of OJ every morning). Colin was not too impressed with my hasty decision since we just bought four 1.75 litres of OJ last weekend!
