チャールズ M. シュルツ博物館に行ってきました。場所は、San Rafelから車で北に40分ほど行ったことろにあるSanta Rosa（サンタローザ）という町。スヌーピーの原作者であるチャールズ M. シュルツさんは、このSanta Rosaで亡くなるまでの30年近くを過ごしたそうです。なんといっても世界のスヌーピー博物館ですから、緑に囲まれた丘の上にあるようなイメージがありました。ところが、期待とはうらはらに場所は、町の市民会館があるような場所。ちょっとイメージと違うなと思いながら博物館に入り、シュルツさんを紹介するビデオを観ると、その理由がよくわかります。ビデオは英語ですが、是非観てから博物館を見学することをお勧めします。泣き虫のColinと私は、ビデオを観て感動し、すっかり涙目での見学となりました（笑）。ホッケー好きなチャールズさんは、ホッケーアリーナも建設。ホッケーアリーナは、地元の人達も使えるように、この場所は、観光客のためだけではないのは一目瞭然です。スヌーピーは、Santa Rosaの人たちにとっては、日常の風景の一部。チャールズさんは、ホッケーアリーナの中にあるカフェでよくランチをとっていたそうです。観光客、地元の人達だけでなくチャールズさん自身もよく利用した場所。博物館の中も、フラッシュさえ使わなければ写真撮影もできます。アットホームという言葉がぴったりの博物館。昔、会計士の仕事をしていて、チャールズさんと会ったことがあるというボランティアの方からもお話が聞けました。カフェのランチも、ホッケーアリーナによくあるメニューなのですが、これがとてもおいしい！博物館の公式サイトは、www.schulzmuseum.orgです。入場料は10ドルですが、インターネットなどでディスカウントの券をチェックするのをお忘れなく（2ドル割引券）。

We went to the Charles M. Schulz Museum in Santa Rosa on the weekend. Santa Rosa is about 40 minutes drive to the north from San Rafael. Charles M. Schulz lived in Santa Rosa for about 30 years up to his death. When I think of the world famous snoopy museum, I imagined it to be on the top of a hill, away from the everyday life of a town. On the contrary to my expectation, the museum is in the middle of town close to a residential area. A place you expect to see a community centre. But that is precisely what Charles M. Schulz wanted his museum to be.  As a passionate hockey fan, he also built a hockey arena right next to the museum. This is not only a place for tourists but, it's also a place for the locals (young and old) to play hockey. That's right, it's just like a community centre! I highly recommend you to watch the introductory video of Charles M. Schulz before you start your tour of the museum (it's only10 minutes long). Colin and I ended up...crying (laugh). The museum is amazing. You see all his original drawings of snoopy and Charlie Brown. It has a very casual feel to it. You can take pictures (no flash) as well. We ended up talking to an older volunteer who used to work as an accountant for Mr. Schulz. She told us stories of the when she met Charles M. Schulz.  She was auditing his museum at that time. 

After the museum, we had lunch at the Warm Puppy Cafe inside the arena. They serve typical arena food like burgers, hot dogs, and grilled cheese sandwiches. If you visit the museum, you will want to have your lunch or breakfast there. They were so good! Charles M. Schulz frequented this cafe.  The table he used to sit at is still reserved for him.  We really enjoyed this place. The museum's website is www.schulzmuseum.org
