納豆 (Natto Kit) |
The health benefits of Natto are enormous. Yet, it doesn't have the attention it deserves in North America. I love Natto and I often have it for breakfast. It stinks up our place every time I eat it. I will not comment here on how Colin describes its smell (not pretty). If you are the person eating it, strangely enough you don't notice the smell much. But if you (Colin) happen to enter a room where someone else (me) is in the middle of enjoying Natto, the powerful smell will hit you. I recently heard that odourless Natto has been developed in Japan. But Natto without the odour or the gooeyness is NOT Natto. That is cheating! If you have never tried Natto, try ordering a Natto maki at a Japanese restaurant. It is less messy to eat and you really don't notice the smell as much. Colin describes the taste of Natto as "gooey soybeans." That doesn't sound that bad, does it ☺? You can find Natto in your local Japanese grocery stores (frozen section). Natto comes in a small container shown above. It includes Natto, broth, and Japanese mustard (I personally don't use the mustard). You can defrost this Natto kit in the fridge over night to enjoy the next day. You stir Natto with the broth (and mustard). Chopsticks are the best tools for that purpose (as well as eating Natto). The more you stir the gooeyer it becomes and that is a good thing!
