去年カナダで、Colinと一緒に沢山のレースに参加しました。一番心に残るレースはウィスラーで開催された『Warrior Dash』です。『Warrior Dash』は、アメリカが発祥の障害物競走レースです。ウィスラーは、カナダの西海岸では初めての開催地となりました。10年以上もバンクーバーに住んでいながら、ウィスラーに行ったのは去年が初めての私。アメリカに引っ越す前の特別なウィスラー旅行となりました。レースの前日にウィスラーに到着。一日目は、『PEAK 2 PEAK』ゴンドラに乗りました。決して安くはありませんが、ウィスラーに行かれた際は、必ず一度は乗ってみてください。ブリティッシュ·コロンビア州がどうして最も美しい州と呼ばれるのかがわかります。

私達は、ウィスラービレッジにある Aavaホテルに一泊しました（ホテルは良くも悪くもありません）。今度また『Warrior Dash』をすることがあれば、願わくばパン·パシフィック·ウィスラー·マウンテンサイド·ホテルに泊まりたいです。パン·パシフィックのすぐ外に、ゴンドラ乗り場があって、そのゴンドラで『Warrior Dash』の会場へ簡単に行くことができるからです。もし私達のようにパン·パシフィック·ウィスラー·マウンテンサイド·ホテルは、ちょっと高すぎて泊まれないという方は、レース当日早く起きて車で早めにレース会場へ向かうことをお勧めします。レース後に冷水のホースで泥を流した後、着替えの服がすぐ近くの車にあると、とても助かります。

レースは本当に楽しかったです。私達は何もかもが泥まみれになる前の最初のグルーブでした（レースは30分おきにスタート）。別に最後は皆泥まみれになるので、泥まみれになっていようがいまいが関係ないのですが、気持ちの問題です（笑）。体力的に一番きつかった『障害物』は、最初に山を駆け上ることです。皆、即座に息絶え絶えで、走るというよりヨタヨタ歩くといった感じでのスタートでした。個人的には、障害物の高い壁をロープで登るのは、怖くて泣きべそをかきそうになりました（笑）。Colinとは全部の障害物を一緒に成し遂げる約束だったので、ゴールまで一緒に励まし合いながらできたのはとても良かったです。地面を這いつくばり、高い壁を乗り越え、放水砲でびしょ濡れにされ、水浸しの丘を滑り落ち、炎を飛び越え、泥の池に飛びこんでレースは完了です（Youtubeでウィスラーでのレース模様を録画したビデオをみつけました）。一生、心に残る思い出となりました。

Last year, Colin and I did many races together back in Canada. One of the most memorable runs was the "Warrior Dash" in Whistler. It was the first Warrior Dash to take place in western Canada. It was extra exciting because it was my first visit to Whistler after more than a decade of living in Vancouver.  We arrived in Whistler a day before the race and went on the PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola. It wasn't cheap, but I highly recommend you to try it. You'll understand why British Columbia is called "Beautiful British Columbia." It's breathtaking. 

We stayed at the Aava Hotel in Whistler village (it was ok). If we were to do the race again, we would stay at the Pan Pacific Whistler Mountainside Hotel. You can take a free gondola just outside the Pan Pacific, which takes you right up to the race location. But if you are like us, and can't afford to stay at the Pan Pacific, you have to get up early and drive to the location so that you can park close by.  This is critical if you want easy access to your car and clean clothes after the ice cold shower at the end.

The race was amazing. We were the first wave to start so everything was clean (I don't know why I needed to worry about being clean when you know you're going to get dirty soon after...but that's me). The hardest of all the obstacles was "running" the never ending steep hill at the very beginning. We were all out of breath as soon as the race began. I also found climbing walls were challenging. It was pretty high and I got scared. Colin and I promised one another to do all the obstacles together. It was great. We cheered each other all the way to the finish. We crawled, climbed, got hosed down with a water cannon, slid down a hill, jumped over a fire pit, and swam through muddy water (see the Youtube video above, which nicely summarizes all the obstacles we did in Whistler). It was a spectacular day!
