New Year's Resolution!

I don't make any New Year's resolutions. It's because they never work for me. Stop eating chocolates, read more books, save money, and be kind to my husband...etc. I've always had good intentions, but none of my resolutions last more than a couple of days. HOWEVER, this year is different. I signed up for marathon training. My coach is Erin (Colin's sister). Erin has just launched her multi sports coaching company (swimming, cycling, and running). I can' think of a more perfect person for this.  She has completed numerous marathons and triathlons. And, she is an Iron Man finisher (wow!). Being coached by someone like her is truly inspirational. My training started on January 1, and goes all the way up to my first marathon in June. Well, that's a really good feeling (big sigh of relief!). Having some one like her on my side (she will be with me virtually through Garmin) while I'm attempting to try my first marathon...or anything for that matter!

Does your New Year's resolution involve a half marathon, marathon, or triathlon (or anything!)? Contact "337Multisport" for guidance. You'll need it.

New Year's Eve

Mimosas for dinner (no rules in our household)

Crab
Cocktail sauce (Colin) & Soy vinegar (Me)
Our dipping sauces show we are from different cultures.

Soba with toasted aburaage, tamago yaki, nori, tenkasu, and green onion

Vanilla ice cream with matcha powder

Kohaku ♪♫♬

New Year's Eve is like Christmas Eve for Japanese people. So, if you're married to a Japanese, you get to enjoy two Christmases within in a week (so lucky!). This is how you celebrate the New Year's Eve...Japanese style. Have you cleaned your place? Top to bottom? Ok, good. You can now enjoy your soba noodles. Then, you get to watch this very long singing show, called "kohaku" on TV. It's not that interesting, but you've got to watch it, because it's "tradition." The show has been on for 63 years. Like it or not, we all watch it (yes, that includes Colin). At midnight, you go out...no, not to party! You go to a shrine or a temple of your choice. Back in Canada, we used to go to the Asian Centre at the University of British Columbia. They let you gong the iron bell (fun..?).

The longer you live outside Japan, the more likely you are to cling to these silly traditions. Happy New Year!
