長く、くねくねした道

本日、風速64キロ以上（でも、私達が着いた頃は、風速96キロ近く）

この掲示板によると、アラスカに帰るコククジラ31頭が目撃されたとのこと

風があまりにも強いので灯台へ続く階段は封鎖

私は、思いつきでどこかに出かけたりすることができない性格です。出かける際は、いつもしっかりと計画をたててから。特に北米西海岸で一番強い風が吹く名所に行くとなると尚更です。Nicasioで遅めのランチを食べた後、Colinがこの近くにビーチがあるらしいよ、ちょっと寄ってみようということに。ビーチはこちら『➔』と提示したサインもあるから、きっと道路の先がビーチだよー。という感じで、ポイント·レイズ国立海浜公園へ向かうことになりました。果てしなく続く道路の終わりに...海はありました。ポイント·レイズに着いて気づいたことは、皆さんなぜか冬のコートを着ていること。こんな分厚いコート着ている人は、バンクーバーを去ってから見たことないなあと不思議に思う私達。車の外にでるとその理由は、一目瞭然でした。台風かと思うほどのものすごい強風。周りは断崖絶壁に囲まれた海なので、風をよける場所もありません。そして、なにより寒い。何も知らずに来てしまったので、Colinは半ズボン姿（思いつきで行動することによって起こりうる悲劇の例１）。灯台に向かって歩こうとするのですが、あまりの風の強さになかなか前に進めません。吹き飛ばされないように歩いていると、ここは、ホオジロザメがウヨウヨいますよとの掲示が目につきました。周りは断崖絶壁、岩は、もろくくずれやすいので近寄らないようにとの忠告も。風は、ますます強くなり、今まで聞いたこともないような不気味な音をかもし出しています。写真を撮っていたiPhoneとともに、海に吹き飛ばされ、サメに食べられるのは時間の問題です。やっとのことで、灯台の案内所に着くと、灯台は強風のため閉館とのこと。正直、ほっとしました。灯台に行くには、断崖に作られた急な階段を下る必要があります。海に吹き飛ばされて、サメのご飯になるのはまっぴらごめんです。結果的に言うと、思いつきで来てしまった「北米西海岸で一番強い風が吹く名所」ポイント·レイズ。すばらしかったです。あんなに怖くて美しい海岸線をみたのは初めてです。これからも何度も訪れたい場所となりました。ポイント·レイズに向かう途中、可愛らしい街を幾つか通過してきました。今度は、しっかりと計画を立てて、ゆっくりとそれらの街も探索したいと思います。時々、思いつきで行動するのも悪くないのかもしれません。ポイント·レイズ国立海浜公園のウェブサイトは、http://www.nps.gov/pore/index.htmです。

I don't usually do anything spontaneous. I like to plan things, especially if I were to travel to the windiest place on the Pacific coast of North America! After a late lunch in Nicasio, Colin suggested that we take a short drive to the beach at Point Reyes National Seashore Park. Since we were already in Nicasio, it shouldn't take that long to get there. We saw signs that were pointing us to the beach as if it were just around the corner.  It's probably just at the end of the road...and it was. It was at the end of a very very long road. When we finally reached the destination, the first thing we noticed was that everyone was wearing a heavy winter jacket. The kind of jacket that people in Marin county (where we live) don't usually wear. As soon as we stepped outside of the car, we knew why. It was so windy that it was difficult to stand still. And, it was really cold (Colin was wearing shorts). With much difficulty, we walked to the Lighthouse Visitor's Center and there we found out that the Light house was closed due to high winds. I was relieved it was closed. I really did not want to walk down this steep stairs which leads to the Light house on one of the windiest days. The water looked menacing. And it should, because there was a sign saying that this place has one of the largest concentrations of Great white sharks. I was using my iPhone to take pictures, and I was convinced that my iPhone would be blown away at any second. Was it worth it? You bet it was. The view from the point was magnificent. We were just expecting to see a nice beach. But instead, we saw the most beautiful beach on one of the windiest days. All the crazy wind made our experience at Point Reyes a much more dramatic one. I have to admit that being spontaneous can be fun. We will definitely be going back there, but with a bit more preparation next time. We drove through a couple of cute small towns on our way to Point Reyes. We will be definitely exploring these towns too next time.
